Jaffa Cake: Biscuit or Cake?
This site has won the award for 'MOST RANDOM TOPIC OF THE YEAR' for the past 3 decades constantly. But what
makes it so special. Well, for many a years, the people of the Britain have had chocolate cakes thrown at them. But today,
ladies and gentlemen, we look into the mystery surrounding the Jaffa Cake. Is it a biscuit or a cake? The evidence suggests
both, so it is up to you to decide. Rik Waller will be eating the results once they have been finalized.
The Jaffa Cake
McVitie's Jaffa Cakes are really quite unique. They are different from other biscuits and are more like cakes than biscuits.
I think of biscuits as being 'hard' and 'crunchy', but Jaffa Cakes are light, soft and spongey. The base consists of a light
sponge cake and the top is an orangey jelly covered in a thin layer of plain chocolate.
On opening the wrapper, you
are greeted by the smell of dark chocolate. As you take a bite, you can taste the chocolate and the sponge immediately. The
sponge melts in your mouth and gives way to a fruity aftertaste provided by the orange centre. The sweetness of the orange
jelly contrasts well with the dark chocolate - a very good combination, in my opinion.
Jaffa Cakes are excellent biscuits and I highly recommend them. They are a 'biscuit' of contrasts: the soft sponge against
the sweet, orange filling and thin layer of plain chocolate makes for an unusual, yet delicious snack. I w ould recommend
them with a nice cup of tea or coffee, but BEWARE: they are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE, and you may find yourself finishing off the
whole packet in a very short amount of time!
